Is Safety Unaffordable?
Now, here at Your Mama Reviews, we understand that it sucks majorly to spend a lot of money on baby wash for your kids. I got around my annoyance by considering a few things:
- How much do I spend on my own shampoo? My own hair cuts?
- Could I save $10 a month by skipping trips to StarBucks?
- Should I turn to a big brand I don’t like just because they’re cheaper?
In the end, I made the commitment to purchasing products for my kids’ skin that do NOT contain synthetic fragrances. Even though it sometimes comes across a bit alarmist, I rely in part on the Cosmetics Database to help me evaluate the safety of the products I buy. Don’t buy into the hype that safe bath products are unaffordable. I wish they were MORE affordable, but they are not going to be the straw the breaks your budget’s back.
Also, keep in mind that these products are usually very concentrated. Don’t use them for bubble bath, don’t pour handfuls into your child’s hair. Conserve and use wisely and you won’t have to turn to $3 baby wash full of nasty chemicals. Also, remember that some children are sensitive to essential oils. Play it by ear, try stuff on yourself. A SCENT ITSELF is not necessarily bad, the badness is generally what that scent is derived from.
Here are my favorites–all for under $10.
1. Earth’s Best Organic – $7 at Amazon
Note, this contains lavender from essential oils. If you’re sensitive to EO’s or you don’t like the smell, this isn’t for you.
2. ECOStore USA Baby Soap Bar – $4 and Baby Body Wash – $10 at EcoStore USA (BOGO in July!)
I love this stuff. It passes the “does this make my vagina burn” test. It also lasts a LONG time. I use this to scrub the kiddos so that I can save the foamy stuff for their hair.
3. Daisy Vicious – $8.99 for EIGHTEEN OUNCES at Alice.com
I love this. Yes, it smells like lavender. Is it gentle on all the parts of my body? Yes. I keep this in both bathrooms and use it on the boys constantly. I love the foam consistency. My bottles have now lasted for THREE MONTHS. That’s less than $3 a month.
4. California Baby Super Sensitive – $9.99 at Target
The absolute best I’ve found for my kids’ sensitive skin. No fragrances at all. A little goes a LONG WAY.
5. Baby Tate Orange Blossom and Honey Baby Soap – $7
Pricey for a bar of soap, but goes a long way. Keep it in a soap dish to preserve it. The aroma comes from honey and essential oil. I find it to be very light.
In Conclusion
Keep in mind, if your child has very specific skin conditions you’re pretty much stuck using expensive cleansers like Cetaphil, which aren’t all natural but are recommended by dermatologists and have NO fragrance. I use this when my son is having flare ups but I have had no problems with the five brands listed here. His flareups happen when he’s exposed to environmental elements he’s allergic to, or when we use sunscreen on him.
Safe baby wash shouldn’t just be a concern for kids with sensitive skin. Synthetic fragrances (in many household chemicals and body products) are being linked by REAL LIVE SCIENTISTS to a host of health concerns.
Hope this helps as you try to figure out what to use on your baby (and on yourself if you’re pregnant or just concerned)! For more info on WHY it’s important to avoid synthetic fragrances, I recommend checking out HealthyChild.org.

A very informative article. Thank you. I usually get California Baby super sensitive at my local Super Target for $9.99 and no shipping costs. (just FYI) ; )
Thanks for the tip!
The ‘does this make my vagina burn test’ made me guffaw out loud, thanks for the laugh. Also, thanks for the recs! <3

Too me this things became irrelevant once my baby came into the world and I know this happens to most mothers out there.
Thanks for the information. I never knew that synthetic fragrances could be harmful to my kid. Gotta look at this immediately. Thanks once again for sharing this.
An interesting discussion is worth comment. I believe that you will need to write a lot more on this topic, it may not be a taboo subject but usually people aren’t adequate to speak on such topics. To the next. Cheers
