As a little girl, one of my favorite imaginative games was “OMG STUCK ON AN ISLAND.” Seriously. First I’d wash up “ashore” on the side of our pool. Then I’d creep and crawl across the yard until I arrived at our playground. (My makeshift island hut.) I’d spend all day gathering leaves and sticks and making “medicine” out of mud and twigs in a bowl. It was pretty much the best thing ever.
That’s why when Team Mom sent me a Backyard Safari kit to try out with my four-year-old, I was pretty psyched. He hasn’t quite gotten into serious imaginative play yet, but he still had a great time exploring the yard with his field guide, vest and bug vacuum.
At $20, the Bug Vacuum makes a great gift. (I recently bought another one for a friend’s four-year-old actually.) The suction isn’t super hard, but that was kind of relieving since my son’s the type who might try to vacuum his own face or something.
In the era of TV and handheld games, I’m a fan of anything that inspires my child to go outdoors. You can pick up Backyard Safari Outfitters toys at Summit Toy. You can also follow them on Twitter.
