We live in Florida, where bare feet are the norm. Especially in our house. My stepson can’t even ride in the car for 5 minutes without kicking off his shoes. We like the sand between our toes.
And of course, babies are supposed to learn to walk barefoot, so that works out well for us.
But then the bitter cold of winter hit. And a trip to Wisconsin for Christmas. And actual walking on concrete and dirty floors.
And I realized I needed to get the baby some shoes that would actually stay on her feet and be flexible enough for her to continue learning to walk.
I searched high and low for something cute, practical and affordable, until I found umi Infant Puggle Pre-Walker shoes on Amazon.com (our affiliate).
Until the umi’s, Piper hated shoes. HATED shoes. She’d cry, tug at them, and always figure out how to undo the velcro. But not the umi’s!
What I absolutely love about the shoes:
- They were affordable. These pink and brown ones were only $15 when I got them. I know umi can be much more expensive though – but I’d totally have paid more if I’d have known how awesome they were then.
- They stay on her feet. They fit like a leather glove.
- The soles are leather, with little rubber ‘spots’ that help with traction, so they are great for learning to walk.
- They’re not hideous, like other leather-soled shoes on the market. I chose brown/pink because it matches a lot of what she owns.
There’s not really anything I don’t like about these shoes – they’ve held up to day-after-day wear for the past three months. If Piper finds them in the house, she brings them to me wherever I am so I can put them on her. When she was first learning to walk, she actually walked better in the shoes than barefoot.
I’m looking for a pair of sandals for the summer, and I’m hoping umi has some cute styles because I absolutely love these shoes.

These are cuuuute and I love that they have the little rubber spots on the bottom.
