It seems that these super-duper-ultimate-mega-do-everything cleaning cloths are all the rage these days – and I was just as curious as you to try one. I mean, come on – you can remove all of my shower’s mildew buildup with just water? P’shaw.
I received an Ultimate Cloth to test a few weeks ago. And I’ve got to be honest – it was ok. It certainly wasn’t a ‘wow’ product – but it did live up to its claims and gave me sparkling clean windows without any chemicals. That alone shows me it’s doing its job.
The cloth is made of an almost paperish materials – it’s stiff and hard to wring out and gets crinkly. Sort of like newspaper but it doesn’t fall apart when you get it wet.
You’re supposed to get it wet and then wring it out as much as possible – any excess water and you’ll be left with streaks (just like any other wet towel, I suppose). When you’re done, you can toss it in the laundry with bleach if necessary and it’s good as new. No laundry softener though – careful.
Overall, I like the cloth but found it was really only useful for my windows. It claims to be good for any ‘flat surfaces,’ and I can see it working elsewhere but it’s no powerhouse scrubber – I need a good knobby rag for my bathtub and stovetop.
Pros
- Works with water only – no chemicals needed.
- It really is streak-free if used properly.
- Easy to wash and re-use.
- Reusable.
- Eco-friendly all around.
- Can be used as a mop-head for Swiffer or other disposable mop systems.
Cons
- Stiff and difficult to wring out.
- Dirties quickly if you have windows covered with dog slobber – requires rinsing before finishing.
- Not entirely useful for anything but windows.
Overall, I think the trend toward these reusable cleaning cloths is a good, green move – but they can end up being a lot more expensive than cheap window cleaner and some rags.
