My three-year-old nephew is absolutely obsessed with LeapFrog’s Letter Factory DVD. It doesn’t have the grown-up appeal that many kids musical DVDs have, but it has a lot of great musical lessons that help kids pick up letter sounds. (Personally, I try to make a point of having something else to focus on when it’s on.)
The LeapFrog team offered to send us their newest title (the first new one in a few years, actually) called Let’s Go To School. My son found it engaging, especially since his three-year-old preschool feels much more like “real school” than his two-year-old preschool did. The DVD covers all the basics you’d expect from a DVD program meant to help ease kids through back to school jitters and familiarize them with a classroom atmosphere.
Some of the subjects are a little advanced for preschool. (Do kids that age really have chalkboards, chalk and globes?) But overall, my son was able to connect with it. The sing-song lessons are very much in line with the teaching methods he experiences at school, but when it comes to pure entertainment value, we haven’t re-watched it too many times. At this age, my son seems to prefer a plot or more engaging musical numbers.
If you’re looking for a teaching tool to help introduce your child to school, I’d recommend this DVD. However, if your child already loves school, you’ll probably be better off passing and investing in an interactive LeapFrog toy. We love the LeapFrog line of learning toys (particularly their baby toys and the LeapFrog Tag).
