Your Mama Likes Encouraging Hand-Washing

When Shandle offered me a sample Shandle to try, I have to admit I accepted just because the name is hilarious. (Come on guys, it’s short for “Seat Handle.” What did you THINK it was short for?)

shandle01But the thing is, I need all the cleanliness help in the bathroom I can get. My three-year-old is still at the stage where he is capable of covering every square inch of my bathroom with urine in under thirty seconds. The Shandle attaches to the toilet seat and provides your child a clean way to lift and lower the seat without touching the dirty toilet seat. The Shandle also has cute little pictures to remind kids to wash hands. (That’s actually the focus of the product.)

Since my son can’t read, the biggest benefit for us has been the handle’s function. He uses it to lift and lower the seat, and I am therefore less grossed out.

shandle02But for older kids, I can definitely see where the messaging could serve as a handwashing reminder. In these days of swine flu hysteria, any amount of handwashing helps. At about $7, this isn’t a huge splurge. If you don’t have small children and you do have a husband who could use a little extra reminder to lower the seat (and wash his hands) they also make plain Shandles. (Personally, I love the printed ones.)

I recommend this if you have children under the age of about 10 in the house. It isn’t going to promote clean hands all on it’s own, so always make sure you have a stepping stool handy, plenty of soap, and clean towels for drying hands. (It doesn’t hurt to supervise.)

This unrelated but hilarious video has actually helped my son perfect his handwashing techniques:
