My son learned about the Laurie Berkner Band from watching the Noggin shorts in between shows. (RIP Noggin, I miss your commercial-free goodness.) Her Family song, which unfortunately isn’t available on CD or DVD, is my kids’ current favorite thing ever. (I’m embarrassed to admit that I know all the words, and it totally makes me cry woobie hormonal tears.) I bought the We are… The Laurie Berkner Band DVD on amazon.com after my son asked me to listen to “the singing lady” every day.
Laurie Berkner isn’t my personal favorite. In fact, I find the folky childish music to be grating at times. (Although at other times, such as in the Family song and a few of her more uptempo numbers, I find myself dancing and humming along.) The thing is, kids’ music isn’t about me. It’s about what my kids like. And my kids LOVE The Laurie Berkner Band.
My three-year-old dances around the house when we play the DVD. He sings along with the buzzing bee song. He even found a bee toy and calls it his “buzz buzz buzzing bee friend.” I know when I stick the DVD on I can count on him dancing and staying active instead of just sitting and staring. (Mostly we’re into the sitting and staring thing at my house. So the dancing is a big deal.)
, this DVD would make a nice gift for families of young kids. It isn’t all that hip or educational, but it’s a definitely a hit with my baby and my preschooler. The songs are silly and fun and center around enjoying music for the sake of music. Sometimes that’s a lesson worth focusing on.

Oh my gosh, the Family song makes me cry too. I have heard it 500 times (we miss Noggin too), but when my girls and I sing along with it, I cry like a baby. (in a good way) :)
i just love this song great post thanks keep up the good work.
