Gift Guide 09: Your Mama Loves Digital Cameras for Kids

kidizoom_01When my son turned three in April, I bought him the VTech Kidizoom camera.  My husband and I are both really into photography, and I wanted to give him something he could use on his own.  (Without the danger of him breaking our nice camera.)  To be honest, I wasn’t really sure he’d catch onto it.  But I figured it would be a toy he could continue to use for years to come.

I was surprised to find him taking pictures the day he got the camera.  He walked around the house, asking people to say “cheese!”  He documented all the toys in his toy room.  He went on a photo safari in the back yard.  He checked the digital display (just like mom and dad) to see if his pictures came out nicely.  It was absolutely awesome to watch.

kidizoom_03Now, the Kidizoom for some reason is retailing around $60 now.  I paid $50 for it in April, so I have no idea why it costs more now.  That being said, I recommend getting this ONLY if you’re sure your kid is going to be remotely interested in it.  Otherwise, yikes, pricey.  This may be a good gift to nudge the grandparents about getting for your kid this holiday season. According to the VTech website, it’s discontinued so I’m guessing they’re rolling out another version for the holidays.

Here are the specs:

  • It won’t break if you drop it.  Or, apparently, if your child throws it.
  • 2.0 mega pixel resolution
  • Takes pictures and video
  • Built in photo editor and 5 hand-held games (we haven’t played the games at all)
  • Stores 500 photos or 10 minutes of video
  • Has goofy built in frames and stamps to add funny faces, etc. (difficult for a 3-year-old to figure out)
  • Included CD-ROM photo editor (we did not use this at all)
These are photos taken by my son with the flash on, indoors:

Flipper buy

As you can see, the picture quality isn’t stunning.  But I found outdoors pictures to look surprisingly sharp.  Indoors, the flash has a tendency to blow out what your kid is shooting.  Some folks recommend putting tape over the flash to filter it.  We haven’t tried that.
You can pick up the Kidizoom at a few places.  I’ve seen low prices at Wal-Mart, but they appear to be out of stock now.  I found it on Amazon.com from $48 to $80 dollars.
