Your Mama Thinks GAD Baby Cloth Diapers are Okay

Unlike our other Your Mamas, I’m not a cloth diapering expert. However, I do cloth diaper my girls part-time with Bum Genius 3.0′s, which I’ve found very easy to use.

Bum Genius 3.0 diaper profileWhen I had the opportunity to try out GAD Baby PUL pocket diaper, I figured I’d give it a shot to expand my CDing horizons. Unlike my Bum Genius diapers, the GAD diapers use snaps to close around the leg (snaps are harder than Velcro for babies to undo). The insert I got is their one-size hemp insert, which is folded and stitched in half in an open loop with an extra flap at the end. This allows you to fold over part of the insert to get a total of eight layers of protection.

Green Acre Designs cloth diaper profileThe hemp MUST be “primed” — either washed with detergent about 10 (yes, 10!) times, or boiled with a touch of Dawn for 15-20 minutes. I found this out the hard way when one of my girls woke up completely SOAKED and miserable from a failed hemp insert. Perhaps a very experienced cloth diaperer might enjoy these more, but I found them just okay.

Pros

  • Made by WAHM’s in the US
  • An astonishing amount of designs and colors to choose from. HOW CUTE, and they’d make an awesome gift for your favorite CDing mama.
  • Compared to my BG’s, the GADs have a lower “profile” — i.e., they’re not as poofy as the BG’s, so they don’t cause as much pulling/stretching of clothing
  • Incredibly soft lining

Cons

  • The snaps might be harder for baby to undo, but they also make securing the diaper harder for mom, especially with a wiggly and impatient baby on a changing table
  • Snaps in set places mean that you only have so many size options. If your baby is at a slightly in between stage, you risk either pinching her legs by making it too tight, or leaking by making it too loose.
  • I found the insert difficult to work with. It seems like it never quite fit right in the size medium diaper I got, and I never figured out different folding techniques to increase absorbency where I needed it. I didn’t find any instructions on GAD’s website either.
