Your Mama Loves Making Her Own Baby Food

Cloth diaper starter packs have been my go-to baby shower gift for the past 9 months.

That is until I found the Beaba Babycook.

I’ve had my eye on this nifty little contraption but couldn’t justify another appliance.  Then, the lovely folks at Beaba allowed me to test one of these little time-savers – and I’m sorry I didn’t spring for it months ago.

The Beaba Babycook is a fantastic all-in-one little contraption that makes home-made baby food ridiculously easy.  It steams food, then in the same appliance, it blends it all up (evenly, I might add) into a perfect baby-friendly consistency.  You can also use it to reheat jars of food straight out of the freezer and avoid the microwave all together.

I was a little confused about it at first – I mean, I honestly didn’t think it would be so easy.  I started small, with broccoli and carrots.   Within 15 minutes total (and all of about 5 minutes of my involvement in the process), I had a full ice-cube tray of fresh veggies for Piper.  Then I got a little more adventurous – using the Beaba recipe book as inspiration.  I threw in a little raw chicken cut into chunks, some leftover cooked pasta, a whole fresh tomato, some garlic and onion powder.   All into the same little container.  I turned it on and let it steam.  Fifteen minutes later, I had a fully-cooked healthy pasta meal for little one – with a little kick to boot.

Dumbo film Since then, I’ve been using it to cook up whatever it is I’m making for the family – pork with veggies and brown rice?  Turkey sausage with asparagus?  Hamburgers with onions and tomatoes and corn?  It all goes in, cooks up, and makes a few days worth of food.  I freeze what she doesn’t eat that night and she’s got lunch and dinner for the week.

Here’s a really bad video of how to use the Babycook.  (Please pardon the distracting lawn mower in the background – when my fiance says he’s going to mow the lawn, I know better than to try to stop him.)

Things I love about the Babycook:

  • It’s so easy.  One container, no mess, 15 minutes to cook then blend.
  • It doesn’t take up too much room on my countertop.  It’s only slightly larger then a standard food processor.
  • It’s cute.  Lovely shades of green and orange.  Shallow, I know, but if it’s going to sit out on my counter . . .
  • It’s really easy to clean.  The 3 or 4 parts come apart easily and are all dishwasher friendly or easy to clean in the sink.
  • The food processing function is fantastic – everything is chopped evenly and thoroughly, and I am able to keep things a little on the chunky side for my 9 month old.

Things I’m not so sure about:

  • The lid on the cooking/blending container is plastic and vents a little steam while it’s under high pressure.  Not a lot, and everything cooks thoroughly, but I have to move it out from under the cabinet.
  • I wish there was an “I’m done!” alert.  I’ve started the steaming process and walked away only to return two hours later with the machine still on and soggy peaches still in the container.  It’s so easy to start that I need to remember I’m in the middle of cooking.
  • It’s pretty spendy for a simple machine (it retails for $149.95 at Williams-Sonoma).

If you’ve got an infant who’s just getting into solids or need a baby shower gift for a close friend, this is my #1 pick for sure.  It’s not a must-have, but it is certainly a ‘really great to have’ for any mom who wants to provide healthy, easy meals for her baby.
