Your Mama Likes the Alpha Sherpa Diaper Backpack

I wish I’d known when I was pregnant what I know now.  Or, I wish I’d read more reviews on the products I purchased.

For one, I would’ve bought a bigger diaper bag.

Cloth diapers take up a lot more space that regular diapers – and you have to carry them around even after you’re done using them.  Days at Gramma and Grampa’s, or out at the beach or just out running errands mean very full bags.  Then, when Piper started going to a sitter during the day, I realized that my cute SkipHop Dash was not going to cut it.

After the first week at the sitters, the first week of stuffing as much as would possibly fit into a bulging bag that wouldn’t stay shut, the folks at Baby Sherpa offered their new backpack diaper bag, the Alpha Sherpa, for me to review.

This backpack doesn’t look anything like a diaper bag.  It’s black and metallic with more pockets than I can count.  It’s ridiculously utilitarian and the perfect size for a full day away with cloth diapers.  There are essentially two main compartments – the top has a wide opening and pockets that fit a pack of wipes, a hook for keys, and a few smaller mesh pockets.  I’m able to shove 5 or 6 AIOs in, with wipes, a wetbag and a couple extra onesies.  Sometimes I’ll even add a swim diaper or two with a swimsuit.  Its roomy.

The bottom half is the best part:  it’s a cooler.  It’s fairly waterproof and really big.  If we’re going to the beach for the day, we can add our 6 pack of beer, throw the bottle in the side bottle holder, and still have room for some snacks.  It even keeps ice cold for an entire day (in Florida sun, no less).  On other days, I use it for the baby’s lunch – yogurt, some cut up veggies or fruit, etc.

Things I like about the diaper bag:

  • There are all kinds of little side pockets and interior pockets.  I have them loaded up with baby Motrin, sunscreen, random snacks and toys, extra bibs and baby-sized spoons.  Nothing is ever lost because it’s so easy to stay organized – I’m not digging endlessly in one large compartment.
  • There’s a changing pad slid into the back which pads the back nicely and is easy to access.  Photos show others using this pocket for a laptop, but my 17″ beast won’t fit.
  • The shoulder straps are seriously padded and if I had any hiking to do, they’d be comfy for a nice trip in the woods.
  • The backpack doubles nicely as a backpack and I can see myself using it even after I don’t need to carry diapers around anymore – which I can’t say about the SkipHop.  Overall, a good investment for that reason alone.
  • It’s definitely dad-friendly.  Adam has no problem taking it out with him for the day.
  • Did I mention the bottom half is a cooler and I can fit a 6-pack of beer in it?

Things I’d change about the bag:

  • It definitely needs hooks or straps to hook it onto the handles of a stroller.  This is one of my favorite features of my current bag.  No one wants to wear a huge backpack around the mall while pushing a stroller.  I had to pull the shoulder straps as small as they would go then clip the extra length up in a weird way so it wouldn’t drag on the ground.
  • The cooler leaks, although I expected it because I know that no zipper will contain water. Still, the zipper might be better just at the top of the cooler compartment than also running down the sides.
  • The price is a little prohibitive ($119).  It’s a lot to shell out – but I can tell you having bought the wrong diaper bag, it’s a bigger decision than you think it might be.  I mean, this thing is going to go everywhere with you and you’ll get to know how it feels, works and looks just like any purse or bag you use every day.  Plus, you can use it after the diaper days, so it’s not really that bad.

Overall, I am in love with this bag and so happy to have found it.  It’s the perfect bag for long days out and more adventurous excursions. It would make a great baby shower gift or one for any parent with babies, toddlers or kids in general who needs to regularly haul stuff around.
