Your Mama Loves Weeds on DVD

Last year, my husband started watching Weeds. He got to about the fourth episode and then demanded that I watch it with him. It took me about ten minutes to fall in love with Mary-Louise Parker’s lead character, Nancy Botwin.

Fact: I think Mary-Louise Parker is one of the most beautiful, talented actresses on the planet. Additionally, she has a super nice ass.

weeds_01Weeds is the story of a suburban mom who turns to selling pot to make ends meet. It begins after the loss of her husband, who is featured in flashbacks. (Super hot Jeffrey Dean Morgan, AKA Dead!Denny.)

Weeds is funny, obscene, and often heartbreaking. I adore the sharp writing and every single cast member pulls his or her weight. Don’t go into this expecting a typical weed comedy. It’s not about getting high and giggling. (Though, thanks to a few stoner/screw-up characters, getting high and giggling does happen. And it’s hilarious.)

Each episode is pretty short. You can easily watch a handful in one evening. (I stayed up way too late on many nights catching up to the current season by watching the first three seasons on DVD.)

Season Four had some odd moments to me, and I was worried that it was departing too much from the tone of the series. Sometimes in Season Four, Nancy Botwin loses the complicated humanity that lets you identify with her despite her mistakes. And it just gets weird. But once Demián Bichir’s Esteban shows up and heats up the season, everything seems to get back on track.

Right now we’re watching Season Five as it airs, and I’ve loved every episode. In addition to having a great cast, Weeds also features great guest stars. Overall it’s one of the most entertaining shows I’ve seen in years. (I consider it right up there with Dead Like Me, although it’s a bit darker—in a more realistic way.)

The Weeds Season Four DVD

Hawk the Slayer trailer

features all 13 episodes, as well as cast commentaries and some great featurettes.  Additional bonus: Hunter Parrish has gotten all grown up and legal and increasingly shirtless.  One of my favorite parts of the DVDs are the covers.  I love the clever, weed-themed pinup-style photos of Mary-Louise Parker.

Bonus! Right now Amazon.com has Weeds Season Four on sale for less than $20.
