I recently took a trip out to Colorado with my husband and our twin daughters. This caused a tremendous amount of panic, not only because we were going to be on a plane for 3 1/2 hours with twin infants (yes, we’re crazy), but because babies need stuff, and twin babies need twice as much stuff.
Luckily, I found out about Baby’s Away rental service. Baby’s Away is a nationwide establishment with 70 local chapters offering baby product rentals. You can rent everything from Exersaucers to Pack n Plays to car seats.
For our four-day trip, we rented two Pack n Plays and two car seats. We could select from three different types of seats (infant, convertible and booster). All of the equipment was clean and in great shape. They even included clean sheets for the Pack n Plays.
Baby’s Away will meet you at the airport to give you all the gear you need, and you can meet them at the airport to drop it all off on your way out. While this is helpful, it gets better — for an additional fee (we paid $10 for each trip out), Baby’s Away will actually drop all your crap off wherever you’re staying so you don’t have to worry at all about installing a car seat at the airport after enduring three-plus hours on an airplane with two screaming babies. (True story. Happened to us.)
Cost: We ended up paying less than $150 for our four-day trip. It does seem like a lot when you say it that way, but it include the two Pack n Plays, two car seats and on-site drop-off and pick-up service. The convenience factor alone made it worth it. (Though I could have bought all that crap used in Colorado from Craig’s List for cheaper, I know.) And as far as renting car seats goes, I found it significantly cheaper to do it through Baby’s Away than through a car rental service.
We did run into one small snag. The woman we’d been in contact with for the rental was supposed to pick the stuff up at my friend’s house after we left. She said she’d be in touch with my friend to arrange a pick-up time. It took her a couple of days to arrange something, and she ended up calling the day of the pick-up, kind of freaking out about needing to get the equipment. I found this to be a bit inconvenient (for my friend), as people generally have lives to lead and wouldn’t it have been nicer for the lady to call the day before to arrange a pick-up time?

Good to know! I’ve always wondered if there is an easier way to travel across country with a baby!
