My son adores cars. Specifically Disney’s Cars. But beyond that, he isn’t like BOY BOYITY BOY BOY about the things he enjoys playing with. And I love that. I want him to carve out his own likes and dislikes, as opposed to feeling like he has to play with mechanic kits and monster trucks just because he’s a manchild.
In fact, his favorite activity is cooking. He has a small kitchen set and a bunch of plastic food items. He also likes helping me bake, though I don’t bake as often as I did when I was pregnant.
It’s hard to find gender neutral cooking toys, so when Bumkins offered one of their Waterproof Toddler Aprons for me to review, I was thrilled to find a variety of prints. Though they’re marketed primarily as arts and crafts aprons (think painting, glue, etc.) they make wonderful kitchen aprons.
The apron fit my three-year-old great. My only beef with it was the amount of excess length to the ties. Definitely supervise your child, especially if he or she tends to act like a kitten when confronted with a lot of string.
The Bumkins apron is perfectly waterproof, washes easily, and slips on and off easily. If you’re stocking up a classroom, daycare, or looking for an arts and crafts or cooking apron for home, this is a good investment. It’s only $15 and seems pretty sturdy.
I’ve actually been using it when my son eats some yogurt or applesauce, since he still manages to get goopy foods all over his torso.

It’s hard to pick a favorite – they’re all so cute! I love the rose circles one for my daughter and I think the blue stripes one would work great for my blue-eyed boy. Love ‘em!

I tweeted this this post. Twitter ID: JBFTampa – wouldn’t let me copy the link for some reason, but I included @yourmamareviews in the link for easy finding!
My son loves cooking too! We like the Dr. Seuss print. Great idea to use it as a “body bib” for messy foods.

Messy activity idea: Shaving cream finger painting. Use white foam shaving cream and place some in each of several bowls. Add a few drops of washable food color to each bowl- one color per bowl. Let your little one use his hands to mix in the color. Then let them “paint” with the shaving cream- an old cookie sheet is great for this, or use a sheet of foil. They can also experiment with mixing colors of shaving cream!

Definitely the pink paisley!
My mom always used to let me make pretzels with the dough scraps when she made bread – can’t wait to do that with my own (currently 7 weeks) daughter.

I love the blue retro print.
A fun and of course messy activity I have done with my kids is painting with pudding (on finger paint paper.). Color vanilla pudding with food coloring and let them go at it. And best of all who cares if they eat it. LOL!! I let them dry and cut them into fish shapes and read the book the Rainbow Fish to go with our project. The kids really loved it.
I like the urban pink.

A fun and messy activity is to collect leaves, place them on a sheet of waxed paper. Sprinke glitter and shave crayons over them. Put another sheet of waxed paper over them and iron them. Don’t let the kids touch the hot iron.

I think the Pet Parade print is my fav.

Instead of finger painting, take a roll of paper outside and let your kiddos “paint” with their feet on the paper instead of their hands. This is also a fun idea for a playgroup.

My fun, messy activity idea: Finger painting with baby food! My son loved this when he was a baby. We would paint on his high chair tray, making different patterns and shapes, and he could taste the foods too! This could also be fun for older kids, using other foods too.
I like Blue Paisley.

Mud pies are super messy, but you don’t need an apron for that. We also do a lot of finger painting.

A messy but super fun activity that pretty much requires an apron – shaving creme table – I have a glass table so I unload a whole can of cheap shaving creme and let them go at it! They always beg for it. The fact that I usually say no, makes the occasions I say yes so much better!
I like the blue circles design

I like the green horton apron best.
Cover you table (non wood surface) in shaving cream and let them have a blast practicing their abc’s in the foam with their fingers. (This also is a great way to get crayon off your table surfaces, if you let it stand for about 10 min. and wash off with a warm cloth it comes off easily.
