Your Mama Likes Fuzzy, Absorbent Cloth Diapers

berryplushlogoWhen I began cloth diapering, I was surprised to find that a few friends of mine had cloth diapered their children when they were babies.  Many of my friends had advice.  One of the suggestions I heard more than once was to check out BerryPlush AIO diapers. (Particularly for nap time.)

I contacted BerryPlush, and Holly filled me in on the details.

  • They’re an AIO diaper, but can also be used as a cover.
  • They come with a minkee-topped soaker—but you can buy additional bamboo or hemp ones.
  • Minkee is awesome soft plushy fabric that makes you want to rub the diaper on your face.
  • The soaker is highly absorbent, but folds apart to dry quickly.
  • You can snap on the front or the back on the medium and large sizes.  (Good if you have a front-wetting boy.)

berry02Holly sent me a BerryPlush diaper to try out on my son, who wears a size Medium according to their measurements. (When choosing any cloth diaper, make sure you measure your baby’s waist and rise.  Don’t go by weight alone.)

When I pulled the diaper out, it looked small to me—but I was happy to see that thanks to the way the legs and waist are cut, it fit just fine.

The “Lagoon” color is adorable.  Soft but very vibrant.  I checked out the other colors available, and I love the brown “Mother Earth” and dark green “Everglade.”

The first time my son wore the diaper, it leaked. I was super discouraged, since they’re so cute.

After a wash, I snapped the insert to the front of the diaper instead of to the back. This totally solved the problem.  The diaper never leaked again. (The insert must have shifted away from the splash zone when I used the snap in the back the first time.)

berryplush01The inside of the covers/shells is made of the same PUL featured in most cloth diapers.  Once I got the insert situated correctly, the diaper didn’t leak at all.  It fits my son great, and it looks painfully cute.  I found that both the cover and the insert dry very quickly, and that the fabric remains soft and fuzzy over time.  My only complaint was that they’re so cute I never want to put clothes on over them.

At a little over $20, these are a high-end diaper.  If you’re on a budget, it’s worth picking up one or two for long naps.  If you have a girl, they’d look adorable under a dress—especially for special occasions. (The bright pink “Sunrise” shade is so cute. Weep.)

Keep in mind that you can buy extra soakers, which should give you 2-4 uses of the cover as long as baby doesn’t poop.  (Since unlike a traditional AIO, you can re-use the cover as you would with a cover and prefolds.)  This makes it more economical.
