Your Mama Can't Help Liking the Wonder Pets

When it comes to children’s television programming, I know it’s way too much to ask for the shows to be engaging and entertaining for adults. I’ve come to terms with the fact that beyond Yo Gabba Gabba, there aren’t too many shows I’d watch on my own.

Wolf dvd

wonderpetsThe Wonder Pets in particular are a special kind of weird. The animation is uniquely choppy, the voices are genuinely child-like, mispronunciation at all. The characters sing odd little ditties all the time.

The Others full

I really, really want to hate the Wonder Pets. After all, I was first introduced to them on The Soup when Joel McHale showed clips and wondered what the hell was going on.

The thing is, the show is really cute. Like painfully cute. In one episode, they totally sing about peeing.  And while I don’t watch it to see what’s going to happen (Spoiler Alert: They’re going to help the animal in trouble over there), I do enjoy catching bits and pieces while my three-year-old watches.

My Year Without Sex movie

He’s totally riveted to the screen with The Wonder Pets are on. It’s wild. Even a little scary. I’d be concerned except for the fact that the show indirectly teaches kids nice little lessons on teamwork and social skills.  He’d give it too thumbs up, but he’s too busy ignoring me and playing with plastic bugs.

Nickelodeon (Nick Jr.) sent us the recent Wonder Pets DVD release, Ollie’s Slumber Party. My son isn’t old enough to have sleepovers yet, unless you count the ones at my mom’s house. But he still loved that episode and the others on the DVD. In case you were wondering, Ollie isn’t one of the three main animals. He’s a reoccurring (adorable) character.

The DVD includes:

  • Here’s Ollie!
  • Save the Hound Dog
  • Save the Cool Cat and the Hip Hippo
  • Tuck and Buck!
  • The Amazon Ollie!
  • Help the Monster
  • Save the Dancing Duck
  • Save the Dalmation

Apparently everything involving Ollie is very! exciting!
