A few months back, Maria and I came across some cool how-to articles on dying prefold diapers. Cool! I though, and put the idea in the back of my mind for a later date.
When Jacquard contacted me about trying their iDye line of fabric dyes, it all came rushing back. Heck yeah! I’d love to try your super-bright, lasting fabric dyes on my diapers! They promptly sent a box of assorted colors and a fixative, so the dye doesn’t stain my little one’s bottom. Bonus.
The first thing I noticed about the iDye was how easy it was going to be. The suggestion is to dye your items right in the washing machine – and, the dye packet dissolves in the water so you don’t even have to open it. Easy!
There is also a stove-top method, which I used, to really make the colors bright and bold. And it worked – seriously. I dyed both my prefold cloth diapers and a pack of onesies for the little one – all of the colors came out bold and bright (even the yellow, which I thought would fade or pale after washing – it hasn’t).
Here’s how easy it was Time Bandits on dvd :
- If you want to tie-dye any of your items, add your rubber bands or string or whatever you’re using. I used a few rubber bands to tie-dye some onesies and a few diapers for fun.
- Add your water, dye, and salt (for cotton fabrics) to a big pot on the stove. Add your fabric items.
- Simmer and stir for about half an hour.
- Rinse, rinse and rinse some more.
- Throw them in the washing machine and run through with a small amount of detergent, then run through one more time with the fixative added.
- Done!

The iDye colors did run some – in fact, my entire load of diaper laundry is a muted shade of pinkish orange, but I don’t think I properly rinsed the diapers (I’m a little hasty). I’ve been careful, regardless, to pull out any clothing that I don’t want discolored and I don’t really care too much about my diaper inserts.
For $3.59 per color and an hour of work, it was totally worth not looking into a stark white drawer of diapers anymore – and when you throw in the super-cute tie-dyed onesies I have now? The afternoon of fun with my 9-year old stepson? Worth every penny.
The dyes come in 30 different colors – so you’re sure to find some that are fun for you – just be sure to buy the iDye Fixative to avoid the overflowing drawer of pink diaper inserts like mine.

Colorful fabrics are great, in my opinion!
