Your Mama Likes Wearing an Older Baby in a Ring Sling

chic02When my son was a couple of weeks old, I tried several slings, including a pouch sling and a ring sling.  He absolutely hated a cradle hold, and in a hug or tummy-to-tummy hold he did not feel secure to me.  I gave up on ring slings.

Then, last month, Chic Tots contacted me and offered to let me test drive one of their Chic & Comfy ring sling

carriers.  I agreed, since my son is now over six-months-old with great head control—the perfect age to try a hip hold.

Paint Your Wagon divx When the sling arrived, the first thing I noticed was the fine quality fabric.  I expected it to be a little rough, since it’s tencel/linen, but the sling is actually quite soft.  I chose the Eco-Chic sling with a blue and green print on the tail.

The instructions were clear, but I wasn’t able to thread it properly until I watched the instructional video.  (The video was short, clear, and to the point.) That being said, as soon as I watched it I had my son in it within seconds.  It was very easy to adjust the top and bottom “rails” to ensure a comfortable fit.  He weighs about 19 and a half pounds and I didn’t feel strange or discomfort.

chic01While I wouldn’t consider this a great sling for long outings (particularly because I have back and neck problems) it’s amazing for the times when I need him in my arms in a hurry and I’m just going to be hauling him around on my hip for a while.  Although this sling is gorgeous, I’ve found myself using it more around the house than I do away from home.  (Which is a bummer because it seems like a waste of such a fashionable and cute sling.)

Runaway buy

High Points

  • Quick and easy on and off
  • Pretty print – it felt like a big accessory
  • The tail has a built-in pocket great for carrying one small item like a cell phone or keys
  • The tail pocket can be used to tuck the sling inside for easy storage/carrying
  • Baby was secure, comfortable, and loved playing with the ring
  • Easy to slide baby in and out for nursing or diaper changes, etc
  • Long tail can double as a nursing cover

Low Points

  • Expensive, but worth it if you plan on wearing it frequently
  • Not great for an older baby to nap in
  • Better for wearing for a shorter amount of time than a long time

Overall I enjoy wearing my baby in this sling and would recommend it to those who would get a great deal of use out of it.  It’s wonderful for short trips to the store and tucks away very easily to keep in a diaper bag or in your car.  It’s also very useful just for bustling around the house.  I can’t speak for use with newborns, but I have friends who enjoyed wearing their small babies in a ring-style sling in the cradle carry.
