Your Mama Likes the LeapFrog Tag

A couple of months ago, my husband went on a business trip.  This happens pretty frequently, but this one happened to coincide with my mom going on a trip.  Which left me with no child care and a ton of work to do.  Before she took off, my mom gave my son a LeapFrog Tag.

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee full

I was dubious about it.  He’s only three, and the Tag is for kids who are starting to read.  But as soon as he figured out that the book would talk to him if he touched it, he spent the next hour touching every part of the book he could.

The LeapFrog Tag honestly saved my sanity.

The Color Purple psp I love that the Tag books are so interactive.  They don’t just read to the child.  Many parts of each page “say” something when touched with the Tag reader.  (We call it the “magic crayon.”)  We got him a Disney’s Cars Tag book and a Dora the Explorer Tag Book in addition to the one that came with the Tag.

While he doesn’t play with them every day, they do promise about a half an hour of quiet playtime. I’d much rather him obsess over making Tow Mater laugh than have him watch a show on TV for half an hour.

leapfrog01The Tag itself is easy to turn off and on.  He just turned three and figured it out after the first time we showed him.  However, if you’re not sure your three-year-old would dig it, you may want to look into the new Tag Jr Runaway divx , which is shaped more like a little round mallet than a pen.  We haven’t tested it but it looks much easier for small hands and the focus is less on reading and more on educational interactivity.

We’ve had the Tag for a few months and haven’t run out of batteries yet.  The books go for a little under $15—not cheap, but not through the roof either.  I figure we’ll get a few more when he shows more interest in reading.  For now he’s happy with the three he has.

A American Hauntingn buy

I’d recommend these for car trips or as a special gift when you know you’re going to need your child distracted in a serious way.  (Without zombie time in front of Dora.)

You can purchase a LeapFrog Tag at LeapFrog.com.  Keep an eye on the site, they run specials pretty frequently.  Bundles seem to be the best deal.
