Your Mama Likes Organic Frozen Kid’s Meals

Meals are sometimes a struggle around here.  (When aren’t they with three-year-olds?)  In the past, I’ve tried Gerber Graduates meals, but for the most part, my son will only eat things like chicken nuggets when it comes to frozen foods.  That why I was excited to try Plum Organics.

plum01“I really love these meals,” I told my mom, showing her the empty cardboard Plum Organics tray—the sign that my three-year-old had eaten all of his lunch. “But they’re $5.00 each.”

Plum Organics allowed me to test two of their Kids meals for free, and I wasn’t sure I’d spend my own five bucks on a preschooler’s meal.

“That’s the same price you’d spend at McDonald’s,” she pointed out.

Holy crap.  She was right.

It’s crazy to think what we’ll spend on completely awful food.   No matter how healthy a fast food kid’s meal claims to be, it’s just not the best option for your child.  And most chains are not serving organic meals.

Plum Organics frozen meals are perfect portions for small kids.  I tested two flavors on my three-year-old and he loved both.  He also liked the whole process of opening the box and helping me start the microwave.  (We’re a couple of real gourmets.)

Fragments buy I wouldn’t suggest or expect parents to feed their children frozen meals every night, but for the days when you’re just too busy or you want some easy, single-serving variety, Plum Organics Kids are a guilt-free option.  Each meal contains an entrée and a veggie side.  (No brownies here, folks.)  With options like Bowtie Pasta with Creamy Sweet Potato sauce, you’re pretty much guaranteed to feel less like a slacker for pulling something out of the freezer.   I personally love feeling like I’m increasing my son’s exposure to new foods instead of throwing some fish sticks on a plate.

The sides aren’t boring either.  Edamame, corn and red bell peppers?  I’ll talk some!

plum02But let’s talk taste.  These meals are healthy.  And healthy doesn’t always mean super taste.  If your kids are used to high-sodium fried foods, you may meet some resistance.  I wasn’t ultra keen on what I felt was a somewhat bland flavor, but my son surprised me by eating every single bite of his.  He was also enthralled by his tiny tray.   I guess I haven’t ruined his diet preferences yet!

Variets of Plum Organics Kids include:

bowtie pasta
cheese-filled spinach tortellini
italian sausage marinara
rainbow pasta shells

Pros:

  • Nice portion sizes
  • Great variety and lots of vegetables
  • Fresh-frozen and organic
  • A source of DHA omega-3s
  • Really cute packaging (okay, that part is just for me)

Cons:

  • Availability—most regular grocery chains don’t carry them.  But if you’re lucky enough to have a Whole Foods, Super Target, or Babies R Us nearby you’re good to go.
  • The tray is cardboard—great for the environment, but a little flimsy.  Try transferring the food to small bowls once you’ve heated it.
