Ice cream can be a big allergy trigger. Nearly every brand of store-bought ice cream is processed in a facility that also produces tree nuts or peanuts. With the exception of a few Italian ice style treats, kids with peanut allergies can’t enjoy frozen desserts. (Obviously for kids with milk allergies, ice cream is seriously out of the question.)
Kids with severe peanut allergies can’t go to ice cream parlors or eat even vanilla ice cream from the store without worrying about the threat of cross-contamination.

So we bought a Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker in April for my son’s third birthday. At just $50, it wasn’t a huge investment. We chilled the freezer bowl overnight and by lunchtime the next day we had delicious vanilla ice cream. It took about five minutes of prep time and 25 minutes in the machine. Just half an hour total.
I found this particularly thrilling because I thought any sort of homemade ice cream involved hours and hours and rock salt and all sorts of shenanigans.
When my son got to try ice cream for the very first time the Ice Cream Maker was worth every penny.
It’s pretty simple to use. So far I’ve only screwed up one batch and that was out of pure user error. (I forgot to put the little stirring attachment thing in before I poured my liquid in.) I also screwed up a batch of coconut ice cream by overcooking the eggs in the beginning. (And by using a weird recipe from the Internet.)
In the past month we’ve made vanilla ice cream, coconut ice cream, coffee ice cream, Barney Butter ice cream, Barney Butter and chocolate syrup ice cream, and lemon sorbet. (That’s an actual photo of our first batch of vanilla!) I have plans to try a Chai Tea ice cream in the near future. The possibilities are nearly endless. Get creative or follow tried and true recipes. Just remember if you’re dealing with food allergies, avoid making recipes that contain potential allergens since you’ll be using the same equipment.
T.A.C.T.I.C.A.L. movies Pros:
- VERY easy to use.
- Comes with a bunch of great ice cream recipes.
- It’s totally easy to make up your own recpes.
- Ice cream can be done in as little as half an hour once the bowl is fully frozen.
- Easy cleanup.
Cons:
- To be ready for ice cream any time, you need to keep the bowl in your freezer. It takes up a decent amount of space.
- We also found that we needed to keep the freezer a little colder than we used to.
I contacted Cuisinart to share our story with them and to thank them for carrying a product so reasonably priced. I also asked them if they’d like to share one of their Ice Cream Makers with one of our readers to help bring attention to Food Allergy Awareness Week.

This vacuum has a HEPA filter and is great for those with allergies. I have suffered from very bad allergies and asthma since I was young so I love using this vacuum and air filters around my home. I also use pillowcases that go over my pillows for allergy problems.

I love adding honey and cinnamon to my vanilla ice cream so I would love to try to create a flavor that actually incorprates all three flavors together.

I would like to try strawberry! My uncle made some last year (not sure if it is the same machine) and it was the best strawberry ice cream I’ve ever had!

I have horrible allergies. I recently tried a product called Allergy Block and so far it has helped my spring allergies quite a bit. You smear a small amount all around your nose, and it blocks the allergens from getting into your sinuses.

I have an older style ice cream machine that is so much work!! I recently got the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream book, and I can’ WAIT to experiment. I’d love to make a real good chocolate base ice cream.
To help with allergies we use Aller-Ease products (mattress protectors and pillow protectors). I notice I’m not as stuffy when I wake up since using them!

I would LOVE to make peach ice cream. When our peaches get ripe, we are totally overrun with them. It would be nice to have something other than pies, cobblers, and jelly. If I could get peach ice cream, maybe I wouldn’t swear at the tree and pray for late frosts every year :-)
Our favorite is just plain vanilla, so that’s what we would make.
