This summer (hey, it’s already summer in Florida, trust me) we’ve been spending more and more time outdoors with my three-year-old.
HABA toys recently let us test out some great beach/sandbox/dirt toys from Maukilo. When it comes to beach toys, it seems like everyone stops by the local drugstore for dollar buckets and shovels. And sure, those get the job done. But are the plastics safe? Are the toys unique and engaging?
We tried out the Spielstabil Mole Hand Set and the Haba Outdoors Spilling Funnel The Prize movie full at the beach and in our back yard.
The Spilling Funnel Coons! Night of the Bandits of the Night
I had more fun with this than my son did. And a friend’s eight-year-old had more fun with it than I did. So I’d say it’s probably best for ages five and up. It also makes a better beach toy than a yard toy. The unique spilling action lets you create gorgeous drip-castles and designs. We were able to write letters and create thin, bumpy walls and towers. Very, very cool. While it says ages three and up, I’d only recommend it for kids that age if they’re pretty coordinated.
This was my son’s favorite item. He isn’t really into superheroes yet, but we couldn’t help noticing that he looked like a badass, plastic Wolverine with these PVC-Free digging claws. They’re not sharp, they look great, and you’re not going to get them mixed up with other kids’ shovels and rakes at the local beach or playground. These worked great in the yard and actually helped me teach my son a little about gardening. At less than $5, these aren’t going to break the bank—and you’ll get hours of fun out of them.

Both toys are appropriate for preschool-aged and young children. They’re appropriate for boys and girls and are very durable.

Maukilo should come with a warning to have the kids far away from the computer when visiting their site.. Because “I Want That” is the sentence I am hearing. The kiddos loved lots of things, a Top contender for them was the Kokua Like-a-Bike Mountain Push Bike LIME. They really don’t care which color. Lime just seemed to work. Awesome site, My daycare Kiddos would love one of everything.. Thanks!

I don’t necessarily shop at one or two places for safe plastics, rather, I always check the #plastic and make sure it isn’t a 3, 6, or 7. If the plastic isn’t labeled with a number, I don’t buy it–it probably isn’t safe. I also appreciate it when plastics are labled BPA-free or PVC-free.
My godson would love this! He spends every weekend at the beach during the summer! I also really like the Sand Shaping Set 3 pieces PVC-Free ! Thanks!
