When my son was 18-months-old, he tried peanut butter for the second time. Within minutes, his lips swelled up, his eyes began watering and swelling, and he developed livid hives over his entire body.
We were lucky. The reaction didn’t affect his breathing.
But within days we learned that he had a severe allergy to peanuts. This discovery changed our lives and the way we think about parenting. But through our journey we’ve learned that many great companies and organizations are out there helping those parenting kids with food allergies.
The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) created Food Allergy Awareness Week in 1997. To help support this cause, we’re featuring allergy-related products this week on Your Mama Reviews.
Surf Sweets offered the chance to try out several samples of their organic, natural candies. Gummy Swirls
These are vegetarian, so they don’t contain the gelatin that makes many gummy candies bouncy and chewy. They have more of a mushy squish to them, but the taste is good. My son loved them, but they weren’t my favorites out of the bunch.
Delicious, chewy, and a little tart. Great consistency and texture. These were my son’s very first gummy worms. He’s been asking for them every day now. I liked the dual flavors. These were my favorite Surf Sweets product.
Maybe it’s from growing up eating Jelly Belly beans, but these weren’t super impressive to me. They had an almost floral aftertaste that I didn’t enjoy. However, my son—who had never had jelly beans before—loved them.
Slightly squishier than the gummy worms, these had a nice sour coating. They’re not too tart. I preferred the regular gummy worms but my son liked these a lot. It’s great to see a fun variety that older kids may enjoy more.
These tasted like regular Gummy Bears. I’m addicted to Haribo Bears so I consider myself pretty discerning. These had the same great consistency and flavor. My son loved them. Because they’re sweetened with real juice, the flavors are somewhat limited. Don’t expect anything crazy and unnatural. (Sorry, fans of blue raspberry.)
In addition to creating a product that’s great for kids (and adults) with allergies, Surf Sweets supports The Ocean Project. I’ve lived on or near the coast my entire life, so I’m really psyched about teaching kids to respect our oceans.

we have had a bunch but one of my girls cannot eat dairy at all- she was getting headaches and puking really bad and the doc kept asking her if she was sexually active- oMFG- we switched doctors and had written out a diary of foods and learned she cannot eat any dairy at all- so we adjust it came on her teens but it happened and happened big time- taking dairy out she does not get migraines or have to toss her cookies…who knows what sets things on but it happened and they indeed said she has reactions to dairy and for her to stay away.
She has learned to adjust to things and the doc was reported to the medical ass. for his comments suggesting she was a 13 year old pregnant.

My husband has an allergy to strawberries that can be pretty severe. On our honeymoon we went to Sonoma and were sampling yummy wines…he sipped at one and…you guessed it! We ended up in the ER on our honeymoon! Never a dull moment :) But food allergies are no joke and I wish people would be more educated about it!

I had a food allergy with Crabs. I was eating a crab cake sandwich at a restaurant and suddenly my throat got tight and I started turning red liek if I had hives. It was horrible. I will not ever eat Crab again after that incident.

I was glad to learn that the products are produced in a facility without wheat or other allergens because my daughter was just diagnosed with celiac disease.
It is USDA certified organic. I’m trying to eat better so I like this. I’m also about to be tested for Celiac, so I like that is gluten free.
My favorite thing about this company (which I am not familiar with – so thank you for the info) is that their facility is nut free.

I have severe shell fish allergies, I found out the hard way that I always need to ask what ingredients are in things when I ate some Chinese food that had oyster sauce…and my throat swelled shut…thank heavens for my epi-pen!

One of my favorite restaurants is a burger joint that offers peanuts to their customers while they wait. They have a sign out front asking people not to take them out of the store because of allergies, but some bring them home anyway. It bothers me because they don’t take peanut allergies seriously!

I’m allergic to mushrooms – but only certain mushrooms (so generally I avoid them all, since sometimes one mushroom gives a reaction and sometimes it doesn’t!) I had gone out to dinner with my brother George and he ordered appetizers and I didn’t know that inside the breading there were mushrooms, and WOW did my entire mouth and lips swell up! It goes away eventually but it’s very uncomfortable and wasn’t a nice way to spend his birthday, which I was trying to make special!

I have food intolerances, not strictly speaking allergies but functionally the same — I have to avoid a lot of foods. It can be really inconvenient, but it makes you be much more conscious of your food choices, plus it’s always exciting to find new foods you can eat, like these!
