Your Mama Loves Sun Safety with UV Skinz

I’m a Florida native, and I have the sunspots and early wrinkles to prove it.  As a child, I spent entire weeks outside without an ounce of sunscreen.  I may be only a matter of time before I experience serious issues as a result of all that exposure.

Now I wouldn’t dream of exposing my child to the sun’s harmful rays.  I don’t want my son to have to examine his moles with fear and paranoia for most of his adult life. The problem is, I have a squirmy, active three-year-old with extremely sensitive skin.  He has allergies and eczema and I hate loading him up with sunscreens that end up giving him horrible rashes. The gentle sunscreen alternatives never seem to work that well at actually blocking the sun.

uv1That’s why when UV Skinz offered to let me test a swim shirt on him, I jumped at the opportunity.  I’ve seen cheap knockoffs at major retailers but never tried one out.  (They looked a little Puritan to me with all that long-sleeved-ness.)  When my son’s UV Skinz swim shirt arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find that he looked downright cool in it.

(He thinks it’s a surfing rash guard, ala’ The Backyardigans in Surf’s Up.)

uv2We spent a solid two hours in the bright Florida sun around lunch time.  (I made sure he had baby sunblock on the back of his neck and his face and ears and feet.)  When we were done, I checked him and found no signs of sun exposure.  No pinkness.  Nothing.

The swim shirt held up well to playing in the water.  My son isn’t a swimmer yet, so I can’t attest to how well he’d swim with it, but the fabric is lightweight and flexible.  I didn’t get the sense that it would impede swimming.  In fact, I paddled him around in the big kid pool for a while and didn’t notice any significant drag.

Here’s why I really dug UV Skinz:

  • Cheaper than lots of sunscreen. I don’t know about you but I go through a gazillion bottles of sunscreen during the summer months.  (Partially from losing them.)
  • Cute. Hey, I’m shallow.  These things are adorable and come in lots of great color combos for boys and girls.
  • Easier than lots of sunscreen. I’m also lazy. And I can appreciate something that cuts down on the 2.4 hours it takes me to get out the door on the way to the pool or beach.

uv3UV Skinz were created by Rhonda Sparks, who lost her husband to deadly skin cancer when he was only 32.  (This is me making an appointment for the dermatologist tomorrow.)  They’re a small company with a great mission and a fun website.

Swim shirts come in sizes for babies, children, men, women, and plus sizes.  You can also get shirts, bottoms, swim bras, and hats.  For outdoorsy families, they also carry great sunscreen tents and stroller covers.

Remember: Always use sunblock on your face, wear a hat, consider wearing sunglasses, and try to stay out of the sun between 11 am and 2 pm whenever possible.

A note on sizing: My son just turned three, so we went with a size four swim shirt.  It’s a little big on him, but he’ll grow into it nicely.  The kid’s swim shirts only come in even sizes so you may want to consult with UV Skinzs’ highly responsive customer support team to find out what size best suits you or your child.
