Your Mama Loves Peanut Allergy Safe Almond Butter

When my oldest son was diagnosed with a life-threatening peanut allergy, I bid a sad farewell to one of my favorite comfort foods—perhaps the comfort food: Peanut Butter and Jelly.

In the year and a half since we found out about my son’s allergy, I’ve cheated a few times. A peanut butter cookie at the office, a peanut butter dessert at a dinner party. But in our house? Peanuts are a huge no-no.  I tried sunflower seed butter but wasn’t impressed with the taste or consistency. I wanted to try other nut butters but it seemed like they were all processed in facilities that also processed peanuts.  We just weren’t willing to take the chance.

barneyThen I heard that Barney Butter almond butter

was peanut allergy safe and ordered a jar. The day it arrived, I practically tore the package open with my teeth.

  • Smooth consistency? Check.
  • No need to refrigerate? Check.
  • No yucky oil on the top? Check.

I immediately made a Barney Butter and jelly sandwich. Let me just say, after more than a year without my beloved PB&J, the experience was magical. To celebrate how awesome it tasted, I followed it up with a Barney Butter and honey sandwich. Holy cow.

In the span of two weeks, I’ve already gone through half the jar. I’ve used it in sandwiches, smoothies, and—I’m embarrassed to say—by the spoonful. It doesn’t taste exactly like peanut butter, but the taste is similar and equally enjoyable. It has a nice, semi-sweet roasted flavor. Guh.

Evidently on top of tasting as good as peanut butter, it’s also healthier with less than half the saturated fat and more fiber, calcium, iron, magnesium and Vitamin E. (And no trans fats.)  But let’s face it, we’re in it for the delicious taste, not the nutritional value.  (Or maybe that’s just me.)

The Barney Butter website has a nifty recipe area that allows you to create yummy desserts. I haven’t tried any of them yet, but if you make the Barney Butter cups, please send me some.

You can order Barney Butter online or purchase it at many retail locations throughout the United States.
