Your Mama Reviews: Nursing Pad Showdown

When I started cloth diapering my second son, I decided to give cloth wipes and cloth nursing pads a try.  As with cloth diapers, it takes some trial and error to find the product that works best for your lifestyle and needs.  In this review, I discuss three cloth nursing pads and one brand of disposable pads to help you find the nursing pads that will work best for you.

The Negotiator movies Willow Pads – Hemp Fleece

Of all the nursing pads I tried, the Willow Pads were the thinnest—almost as thin as disposable pads.  They also appeared to be the most absorbent despite being so thin.  The texture isn’t fuzzy like you would consider fleece to be, but it isn’t scratchy or rough either.  I didn’t notice them under my bra.  They also stayed in place nicely, even with just a nursing cami over them.  One thing to note—you may want to wash them first.  When I wore them before washing them I noticed fuzz that I needed to clean off my nipples before the baby ate.

Pros:

  • Very Thin
  • Highly Absorbent
  • Organic Materials
  • Broad/Wide
  • Resists Odors

Cons:

  • Will lose shape and shrink slightly when laundered

Price: $4.45 for a pair at Willow Pads

Ariana’s Clothesline – Hemp/Bamboo/Cotton Fleece

These fleece nursing pads are extremely soft.  They’re a little thick—you can see them through a thin shirt if you’re wearing them with a cami and not a bra.  But I’ve found that most moms wear the pads under bras, so this may not be an issue.  They’re constructed of three layers of absorbent and soft organic hemp/cotton fleece.  The layer against you skin is bamboo velour, which explains why they feel so incredibly soft.

These pads are a nice size, and very absorbent.  I enjoyed using them a night just due to the softness.  I experienced leakage on two occasions—once in the morning when my boobs were crazy engorged, and another time as I fed on the other breast.  It’s possible that the pad slipped away from my nipple during the nighttime/morning incident.

Pros:

  • Extremely Soft
  • Broad/Wide
  • Breathable Leak Barrier

Cons:

  • Not appropriate for overnight wear if you’re a very heavy leaker

Price: $12.00 for a set of 3 pairs ($4 a pair) at Ariana’s Clothesline

Posh Pads – Bamboo

The first thing you’ll notice about Posh Pads is that they are really, really cute.  Even though nursing pads are something you’re unlikely to show off to anyone but your baby, it’s still nice to have something cute and dainty on.  Especially when you’re talking about a less-than-glamorous wardrobe essential like your nursing pads.  Cuteness aside, the Posh Pads were nice and broad, but a little thick.  It’s recommended that you hand/gentle wash them and let them line dry.  I put mine through the dryer and paid the price—they got a little stiff and worn out after just a few less-than-delicate washes.

Pros:

  • Organic, sustainable bamboo
  • Bright colors make them MUCH easier to find in your laundry
  • Cute designs
  • Broad/Wide

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai film Cons:

  • Requires delicate laundering
  • A little thick
  • Some leak-through if you’re a heavy leaker

Price: $8.95 for a pair at Posh Pads

Lanisoh Disposable Pads

I used these exclusively the first time I nursed.  I changed my nursing pads about twice a day, so I probably used about two billion.  But you can leak for days in these.  Like disposable diapers, they have some sort of space age gel inside.  However, like disposable diapers, they’re not environmentally friendly.  And the cost can really add up.  While they’re definitely extremely thin and quite broad in diameter, they bunch up and fold very easily.

Pros:
Convenient for travel
Almost completely leak-proof
Cheap for occasional use

Cons:
Terrible for the environment

Anger Management move

The Funhouse buy

Expensive in the long run
Lipstick movie full
They get stinky if you leak in them all day

Price:  Roughly $0.25 a pair atAmazon.com
