Your Mama Loves the Bumbleride Indie

When Peaches was born, I had been working my butt off to grow my stay-at-home business so I could, well, stay at home with her fulltime.  I’d been saving and scrimping and furnishing her nursery off CraigsList and with hand-me-downs from her cousins.  Buying a new stroller was not on my agenda, what with all of the perfectly fine used strollers out there.  The only problem was that I couldn’t find one that would do everything I wanted.

I live in Florida, 2 miles from the beach.  We go to the beach like every single weekend and most weekdays April through October.  I’m also a runner.  I don’t jog fast or far, but I knew I’d be hitting the pavement to lose the baby weight.  So I started looking at jogging strollers, for beach strollers, or anything reviewed to do both.  There had to be something!  (Turns out,  there aren’t really ANY reviews of strollers for use on the beach.)

And then I found it.  The Holy Grail of beach/jogging strollers:  The Bumbleride Indie. I fell in love immediately.  No joke, folks.  And, I am NOT being paid or compensated in any way for this review.   I was a little put off by the price:  $400?  After we’d been so frugal on everything else, buying used instead of new whenever possible, it was hard to choke down.  But I kept reading and looking and I decided that this stroller would be the one serious investment I’d make.   I know the Indie isn’t expensive in comparison to, say, the Bugaboo Frog, but I am not a Manhattan mom with urban stroller envy.  I just wanted something that worked for my needs (turns out, though, that Bumbleride is now the new trendy stroller to have – go me!).

I first found the stroller on BabyEarth.com where I had registered for my shower (they also carry cloth dipes and I needed to build my stash).  And I convinced Adam that we needed it.  Take one look at the knobby 12″ wheels, the trendy fabric choices, and you’ll be sold, too.  Not to mention it comes with a little bar so you can pop your infant carseat right onto it, like any other travel system.  It was everything I wanted, all rolled into one!   Even the photos of it (above) showed a woman JOGGING ON THE BEACH.  Seriously.

So we ordered the Indie in Koa – a chocolate brown with a really cool retro-ish cream pattern lining (that is, as of 2009, no longer available – sorry!).  It showed up on my doorstep in less than a week, and took Adam – the world’s WORST handyman – all of 20 minutes to put together.  We were up and running.

Our initial adoration has only grown now that we have a real-life baby to push around in it and real-live beach experience with it.  It handles the beach like no other.  As I watch my friends struggling with their heavy baby buckets banging against their knees, Peaches glides over the sand with ease.   Jogging is gloriously smooth, and the storage underneath makes my Saturday morning market visits a joy.

My only complaints?  One cup holder (wish it had two).  The small pockets on the back of the sunshade don’t hold the weight of my phone without pulling down loosely and scaring me into, well, not using it for my phone (so what else would I use it for? I have no idea).  And lastly – and probably the biggest complaint – the sunshade doesn’t have 180-degree rotation so only covers the back-half of the stroller (see photo).  Thus, when the sun is coming directly into Peaches’ eyes, I have to tuck a blanket around the front of the awning to shade her.  Now, this isn’t a problem when I have the carseat locked in because I can use the carseat shade, but it’s a big problem when I’m walking the boy to the bus stop every morning, directly into the morning sun.
