A few years ago, while nursing my first son, I pumped way too much. I pumped every time I fed, fueled by a completely insane hormone-driven fear of running out of milk. As a result, my body thought I had twins. Good times. The only benefit of my oversupply was that I was able to successfully pump enough for him to eat throughout his babyhood while I worked full time.
Back then, I kept my milk in the Gerber Breast Milk Storage Bags. On more than a few occasions, the bags tore and I lost milk. Since I had about 4 gajillion ounces it was never more than an emotional loss. But for many pumping moms, every ounce counts.
Now that I know better, I only pump 3-4 surplus ounces a day for nights out or travel. This time around, I’m using Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags 007 For Your Eyes Only . So far I’ve only torn one, and it was BEFORE I put the milk in. I think I was overzealous in my attempt to open the bag. And I was probably yelling at my toddler at the same time multitasking.
According to the packaging, these were redesigned somewhere between my last baby and now.
Cool Features:
- I love that you now write the amount and date on a portion of the bag that doesn’t touch the milk.
- Since the bags have two layers of locking action, you’re also less likely to seal them incorrectly.

I recommend letting them freeze flat and then stacking them up in a container you can shove in the back of your freezer for maximum shelf life. Right now, I’ve got them on two shelves for a total of over 120 ounces.
The only con of using storage bags is that they don’t absolutely eliminate the potential for your milk to spoil over time. This is the case with any normal brand, although there are some systems that allow you to create an airtight seal. If anyone has experience with these or other tips to help your milk last longer, I’d love to hear about it.

I use these bags and have never had any problems with them.
i dumped 76 oz. of frown breast milk when my twins (the kids, not mah bewbs) were weaned and refused thawed milk. i painstakingly thawed it all and measured it to see how much there was.
I’ve used both Lansinoh and the Medela Pump and Save bags and much prefer Lansinoh. The plastic just seems better quality and the’re easy to use. I do get very easily confused by the measurements on the Lansinoh bags, though.
