From the day I found out I was preggers, I knew I wanted to cloth diaper the babe. Not that I’m all that granola, but I just thought it was probably the best thing for both Peaches and the environment. Since we recycle despite the entire city of St. Petersburg fighting us every step of the way, I couldn’t stomach adding pounds and pounds of diaper trash to my weekly output. So I started doing some research.

And I found out that these ain’t yo mama’s cloth diapers. They’ve come a long way.
I read a bunch of forums and started building my newborn stash. I bought a few bumGenius 3.0′s (which I adore, and will post on at a later date), and decided that until I got to know the CD world and my new baby, I’d stick with prefolds and covers.
And I came to find out that there is one single asset a good diaper cover must have to perform well: the double leg gusset. What’s that you ask? A double leg gusset is only, like, THE most effective defense against a sopping wet prefold. It’s how my Peaches can, barring any serious spit-up or poo-plosions, stay in her uber-cute clothes for almost an entire day or night. Of all the diaper covers I bought or was given, Thirsties diaper covers were the only with the double leg gusset.
Not to mention the stretchy fabric that comes in like 20 different colors, and the way the velcro tabs have the reverse loop on the outside so I can overlap them and get away with a bigger sized cover when the small ones get a little tight. They also fit Peaches super well and are more forgiving when they get a little on the small side.

I’ve found that I need at least 6 covers to stretch between my far-too-infrequent laundry days, and Jillian’s Drawers is my fav outlet for them. Their shipping is ridiculously fast, and at $10.95 each, they’re a steal. I alternate between two covers at each change – one drying (I wipe them out with a wipe), one in use until poo spoils the game.

Just ordered two covers and eight folds for a mini-foray into cloth diapering. OMG.
I haven’t tried Thirsties yet, but I LOVE Bummis Whisper Wraps. Cute designs and excellent coverage. We haven’t had any leaks yet, even with the most horrifying of poop-splosions.
I have yet to CD as my little boy is due in July, but I stocked up on Imse Vimse organic covers and they have the double gussets. They came highly recommended from CDing friends and I cannot wait to use them. They are super soft too!
I’ve got one of the Imse Vimse organics but am not a fan – it’s cotton so gets really wet with a wet dipe and so you can’t use it again. . . I’m not a fan of using a new cover with every change.
I don’t like Thirsties covers. They are very big on my DS. It looks like he has a balloon in his pants. I have five right now that I am trying to get rid of. I have found that if I am going to use a fitted diaper I like wool covers.
